According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are nearly 45 million homes and more than 72,000 U.S. communities located in areas where wildfires pose a risk.
Here are a few steps you can take before a wildfire threatens your area to keep your home as safe as possible:
- Clear leaves, dead vegetation and other flammable debris from gutters, porches and decks. If there is a fire, this prevents embers from igniting your home.
- Screen or box-in areas below patios and decks with wire mesh to prevent flammable debris and combustible materials from accumulating.
Keep your lawn and the area surrounding your home hydrated. If it is brown, cut it to reduce fire intensity.
